5 tips to creating a cosy home retreat this winter

juicebox 3 minutes Jun 16, 2021

What a year it’s been… and it’s only June!

With Covid-19 putting us all at a certain level of discomfort and uncertainty (not to mention the upcoming school holidays!), it’s about time to put your feet up and relax.

Clear the mind, unwind and get back to you.

Here’s our 5 tips to creating a space of wellness, peace and calmness in your own home.

Step 1: Light Your Fire!

Obviously this is our first recommendation. There’s nothing quite as relaxing and mindful as a lit fire – the crackle of the flames, the blaze of the embers and the heat of the coals all combine to create one dreamy, warm environment.

Make sure you have enough firewood stocked so you don’t have to venture out into the cold for more, and that the room your fire is in is tidy, clean and free of clutter.

We recommend: The ADF HAYRA 85L for the ultimate cosy fireplace, or the NECTRE N900 INBUILT.

Step 2: Find Time By Yourself

This is the easiest way to unwind, but often the most difficult to achieve! In a world where everyone wants you to do everything, be everywhere, and take care of them, finding time for YOU might seem impossible.

But there’s no specific time of day or night that you’re expected to have ‘you’ time – grab it wherever you can! It might be during the day while the kids are at school, or at night when you’ve finished a long day and just need a break.

Either way, the best way to unwind, de-stress and relax is to be solo, without any distraction.

Step 3: Rediscover Your Hobbies

Be it playing guitar, reading a good book, painting, creating, watching a great series or listening to music, now’s the time to get back into your hobbies.

Use the time by yourself (with the fire going), to get back to what you love. And if that’s being snuggled up in a blanket binge watching TV, so be it!

Step 4: Disconnect and Re-centre

Turn off your mobile, power down your laptop and get rid of technology for an hour or two.

Focus on yourself – relaxing, breathing, loosening your muscles…. forget about what you have to do during the week or what a bad day you’ve had, and simply be in the now.

The flames of a wood or gas fire can be extremely therapeutic in letting go of unproductive thoughts and cleansing the mind.

Step 5: Get Fresh Air When You Can

There’s no reason why your retreat space has to be indoors – light an outdoor firepit, bring out the blankets and look upwards – the sky and stars can be humbling, meditative and incredibly relaxing.

Listen to the sounds of nature around you and let the pressures of your life melt away.

Don’t forget citronella candles!

We recommend: ESCEA EP1350 OUTDOOR FIRE TABLE and our range of cast-iron firepits to bring a relaxed vibe to your outdoor area.
